GBICs are integrated fiber-optic transceivers that provide high-speed serial links from a port or slot to the network. Various latching mechanisms can be utilized on the GBICs. There is no correlation between the type of latch and the model type or technology type. GBICs are hot-swappable input/output devices that plug into a line card port to link the port with the fiber optic network.
