Designed to address the increased requirements for gigabit density, scalability, high availability, and multilayer switching in backbone/distribution and server-aggregation environments, the Catalyst 6000 Family complements the Catalyst 4000 and 5000 Families and 8500 Series switches, which continue to provide premier wiring closet and network-core solutions, respectively. The Catalyst 6000 Family also fits extremely well in centralized server farms, providing intelligent server switching, load balancing and Web scalability.The Multilayer Switch Feature Card delivers high performance multilayer switching and intelligent network services for both service provider and Enterprise environments. The MSFC2, in combination with the Policy Feature Card (PFC), provides IP, IPX and IP Multicast switching at 15 Mpps. Both are integrated onto the Catalyst 6000 Family Supervisor Engine IA. The MSFC2 daughter module provides cost-effective, high- performance, multilayer switching and routing services between switched Virtual LANs (VLANs). The MSFC2 is a Cisco IOS router in a compact package and, when used in combination with the PFC, provides intelligent multilayer switching for the Catalyst 6000 Family in a single slot solution.
