All SSA RAID adapters support RAID 5 configurations for high availability, or non-RAID configurations. When attached to an SSA RAID 5 adapter, disk drives can be configured in any combination of (2+P) to (15+P) RAID 5 arrays. In addition, RAID 1, 0, and 0+1 is supported on the IBM Advanced SerialRAID Plus Adapter (feature code 6230). While RAID 1 enables simple disk mirroring, RAID 0+1 provides the additional performance of data striping with high-availability mirroring. The SSA RAID adapters also support High Availability Cluster Multi-Processing (HACMP) for high performance and availability.The bi-directional loop architecture of the SSA adapters helps preserve access to data for critical applications, because a single cable or device failure does not necessarily prevent access to the remaining data on an SSA loop. If an SSA loop is broken, the adapter adjusts to continue accessing all devices in the loop segment.IBM SSA RAID adapters provide a global hot spare feature for RAID arrays in each loop, enabling automatic use of another drive if a failure occurs in an array. This capability allows a failed disk to be removed without disrupting access to data on the rest of the loop.
